Ceramics I

Students will learn the basics of creating three-dimensional art with clay and other sculptural materials. Art will include both functional and non-functional forms. Building techniques will include pinch, coil, slab building, armatures, molds, and modeling. Surface techniques, such as graffito, carving, applique, and was resist will also be learned along with the basics of using glazes and other surface finishes. Studio fundamentals will also include media-specified tool use and how to load a kiln. Along with making art, students will learn how to use the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to design art and to analyze and critique art. Art history is included to provide an entry level appreciation of past, current, and global use of ceramics and sculpture. HEAR
