Description
This course allows for advanced work in the Design & Multimedia Arts Program of Study. This advanced work can be individualized to the specific program of study to allow for specialized study for the student. Students will create a portfolio of work to demonstrate mastery. Specific content and course design will be determined by the instructor in collaboration with the individual student.
This course is for students who are ready for a college-level art experience.
Prerequisites
Students will be admitted through teacher approval. Capstone Art is for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in the study of art and involves significant commitment. Intermediate 2D and other art classes are suggested before taking this course.
Copyright
Students are not allowed to work from published photographs or other copyrighted work. It is required that students draw form imagination or observation as the reproduction of photographs can be considered a form of plagiarism. Copyright issues are discussed with the students early on—they are made aware of the legal issues involved with working from someone’s published work. As well, there are specific things that the student could only reference through a photograph (such as certain animals). Again, in these instances the students thoroughly understand that the image must become part of their larger individual expression.
Class Fee
There is a class fee for the art class you are taking. This was stated in the course guide when filling out your schedule and during registration. Payments can be made in the office. The fee is used to purchase all materials given to students and non-consumables used throughout the course. The class fee of $20 per semester will cover some of the supplies needed throughout the year.
Grading
Grading will consist of three parts:
College Credit
Students may earn 3 college credits from Pike's Peak Community College (PPCC) if they earn a "B" or above is this year-long course. At this time, PPCC charges $10 for the 3 credit but may change. Further instruction will be given on how to receive the credit upon completion.
Explanation of Mastery
An earned grade of a "D" or above will give the student credit. An earned grade of "C" or above will give the student credit and mastery.
Grading of Projects
Pieces will be graded on the following criteria:
Smaller assignments only lasting a day or two will given a 10-20 point completion grade based on the skills demonstrated.
Turning in Assignments
All assignments will be turned in on a Google Slideshow the student creates. This will also be used as the student's portfolio as part of their Final grade. The Google Slideshow will be resubmitted for each assignment handed in.
Portfolio Development and Grading Policy
Assignments have due dates and it is important they are met, as critiques occur on the day projects are due and late work may not be graded. It is important that students have a discussion with the instructor prior to the due date if the deadline is not going to be met or they will miss a critique.
Various preparations for projects will necessitate out of class work such as photographing, sketching, designing, experimenting, writing, researching ideas, artists, mediums, historical perspectives and artistic styles. Grades can be given for this out of class work.
Due Dates
Projects are due on the given due date. Scores will be adjusted for late work.
