AP Studio Art Expectations/ Syllabus
Description
This course is for students who are ready for a college-level art experience. The AP Program is sponsored by the College Board, and AP policies are determined by representatives of College Board member institutions throughout the country. The program allows colleges to evaluate and award student's work by granting college-level credit and/or placement. The course can also serve students who would like to prepare for college, art school or a career in art, by helping them bring together a professional portfolio of their work. AP Studio Art is not based on a written examination; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year.
Prerequisites
The AP program in Studio Art is for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in the study of art and involves significant commitment. It is highly recommended that AP Studio Art students have had previous training in Honors Art (Pre-AP) and be a senior.
Class Schedule Time
Our class will be meeting 1st Period (7:30 - 9:05) Monday & Wednesdays through Zoom. The Zoom link and password will be sent out via email or posted on Schoology. It is expected we meet for the first 30 minutes for Q & A/ Check in.

Copyright
Students are not allowed to work from published photographs or other copyrighted work. It is required that students draw form imagination or observation as the reproduction of photographs can be considered a form of plagiarism. Copyright issues are discussed with the students early on—they are made aware of the legal issues involved with working from someone’s published work. As well, there are specific things that the student could only reference through a photograph (such as certain animals). Again, in these instances the students thoroughly understand that the image must become part of their larger individual expression.
Class Fee/Supplies
The class fee of $115 (this fee may have changed for the 2020/2021 school year) will cover some of the supplies needed throughout the year with $95 going toward the purchase of the AP “exam” given at the end of the year through The College Board. The fee is used to purchase all materials given to students and non-consumables used throughout the course. Unlike other AP courses, a portfolio takes the place of the written exam as mentioned in the description.
eLearning Supplies
Basic supplies will be given to students ahead of time for their projects. Time will be given for supply pick when necessary. The district is still deciding the best process to do this.
Ordering an AP Portfolio
Here are direction on how to order an AP Portfolio. November is the deadline to order. Students and I will need to discuss which portfolio would be most successful for their work. CollegeBoard charges $95 per AP exam/portfolio.
Grading
Grading will consist of 3 parts:
Portfolio Development and Grading Policy
Assignments have due dates and it is important they are met, as critiques occur on the day projects are due and late work may not be graded. It is important that students have a discussion with the instructor prior to the due date if the deadline is not going to be met or they will miss a critique.
Pieces are graded on similar scale as the AP evaluation scoring guidelines, as well as, participations in class and peer critiques. Various preparations for projects will necessitate out of class work such as photographing, sketching, designing, experimenting, writing, researching ideas, artists, mediums, historical perspectives and artistic styles. Grades can be given for this out of class work.
Grading of Pieces
Pieces will be graded on the following criteria (Grading Rubric):
Portfolio Overview
There are 2 possible portfolios for students to choose from, Drawing or 2-D Design. Requirements for these are the same.
Each portfolio consists of 2 sections:
1. Sustained Investigation (60% of graded portfolio)
2. Selected Works (40% of graded portfolio)
* Go to the website below and follow the links to explore the portfolios.
DRAWING
2-D DESIGN
Inquiry Question
The written statement that guides your sustained investigation.
Practice, Experimentation, and Revision
We will be going over these concepts for every project!
-Practice: the repeated use of materials, processes, and/or ideas
-Experimentation: testing materials, processes, and/or ideas
-Revision: making a purposeful change, correction, or improvement
-Development: the furthering or advancing of an inquiry in a sustained investigation (through in-depth exploration of materials, processes, and ideas)
Big Ideas
Big Idea 1: Investigate Materials, Processes, and Ideas
Big Idea 2: Make Art and Design
Big Idea 3: Present Art and Design
Academic Integrity
If a student is suspected of turning in work that is not their own, it will be reviewed by the administration and be scored as a “0” until the issue is investigated.
